Awards And Decorations (Recognition)

"It is amazing what a solider will accomplish for a piece of ribbon." This is a quote that goes beyond theory – it is fact. Awards and recognition are a vital part of any successful attrition management program. Soldiers who earn an award by exceeding the standard deserve to be recognized in a timely manner.

Ceremonies for awards, decorations, promotions or any form of recognition should be conducted with a high standard of dignity. This will foster a sense of belonging and team spirit that will influence a positive retention environment.

AR 600-8-22 is the basic authority for awards to members of the ARNG and also to units for excellence.

NGR 672-1 outlines awards and decorations for ARNG members and units.

State-specific regulations and standard operating procedures provide information on local awards for ARNG members and units.

Local media opportunities: Another form of recognition for the unit and its soldiers is use of the local media. Commanders should maximize opportunities to draw attention to specific achievements and activities of the unit and its soldiers. Public recognition builds morale and pride. These are critical factors in a soldiers decision to remain a part of the unit.
