Bellvue Washington
Seafair Marathon

The National Guard All-Guard Marathon Team started off their season July 9th with impressive performances at the Seafair Marathon in Bellevue, Wash.

The women’s team relays crossed the line in first and fifth place. The first place team of MAJ Holly Scott (DE ARNG), 1LT Martha Swatt-Robison (WY ARNG), SPC Casey Schmitt (MN ARNG) and Capt. Paulette Goodwin (AK ANG) not only won their event, they set a new course record. The fifth place women’s relay team consisted of SGT Tarissa Batenhorst (NE ARNG), SSG Jennifer Kramer (NE ARNG), CW2 Pamela Frost (MT ARNG) and SFC Melanie Rowton(FL ARNG).

The open men’s team of SFC William Kaemmer (OR ARNG), SGT Jason Kirch (WI ARNG), SSgt Jason De Heus (AK ANG) and SSgt Tyrell Heaton (MN ANG) and the co-ed team of SSgt Rosa Bartol (WA ANG), MAJ David Herlihy (VT ARNG), CW5 Brian Peterson (CA ARNG), Maj Troy Frost (MT ANG) each placed second in their divisions.

The All-Guard team placed three in the top-ten in the 5k event. SSG Troy Harrison, (PA ARNG) led from the start and easily won the event with a time of 16 minutes, 42 seconds. From the Utah National Guard, Maj. Eric Petersen and SFC Ray Workman Jr. placed 4th and 8th respectively and both placed first in their age group.

SSG Robert Schnell (AZ ARNG) placed 8th in the half marathon with a 5:49 per mile pace to cover the hilly 13.1 mile distance in 1 hour, 16 minutes, 42 seconds. SSG James Bressette (AR ARNG) completed the distance with a 17th place overall finish and earned second place honors in the master’s division.

The All-Guard team had a top twenty-five finisher with SGT Michelle Elliott (MO ANG) who placed 23rd in the 26.2 mile race. Only a handful of team members competed in the full marathon as they all had just raced at the team trials in Lincoln, Neb. two months earlier.

AUGUST 20
San Diego, California
America’s Finest City Half Marathon

The All-Guard team traveled to San Diego, Calif. to compete in America’s Finest City Half Marathon August 20th. In this highly competitive West Coast event the All-Guard men placed a dozen runners in the top 100. The team was led by SSG Alcides Colon, (PR ARNG), who earned a spot on the awards podium with his 2nd place finish in his age group. Colon crossed the finished line in a time of 1 hour, 16 minutes, 32 seconds to place 25th overall in the field of 6,000. SSG Robert Schnell (AZ ARNG) finished 31st followed by LTC Jeffery Olive (GA ARNG), SGT Jason Kirch (WI ARNG), SSG Curt Carey (IN ARNG) 41st, 44th, and 46th respectively.

The women’s team was led by SGT Michelle Elliott, (MO ANG), who finished 40th on the women’s side. MAJ Holly Scott, (DE ANG) also had a top 100 finish crossing the line in 77th place.

From the Puerto Rico National Guard SGT Luis Diaz finished 2nd in his age group and SGM Isolina Negron, earned a 2nd place finish in her age group to represent the All-Guard team once again on the awards stand.

In a competitive 5k event SSG Troy Harrison (PA ARNG) won his age group with a 3rd place overall finish. Maj. Eric Petersen (UT ARNG) finished 8th overall and captured 2nd in his age group.

SEPTEMBER 3
Virginia Beach, VA
Rock-N-Roll Half Marathon

During Labor Day weekend, the All-Guard team competed at the Virginia Beach Rock-N-Roll Half Marathon. Despite the recent tropical storm the runners adjusted well to the heat and humidity in this world-famous race placing ten runners in the top 200. SSG Troy Harrison (PA ARNG) crossed the line in 1 hour, 13 minutes, 46 seconds to place 42nd in a field of nearly 17,000 runners. SFC Michael Streff (SD ARNG) placed 61st overall. Both Harrison and Streff placed 4th in their respective age groups. Rounding out the top 100 finishers for the All-Guard Team coming in at 96th, 97th, and 98th places were SSgt Tyrell Heaton (MN ANG), 1LT Edward King, and SFC Bill Kaemmer both of the Oregon Army National Guard.

MAJ Holly Scott (DE ANG) finished fourth in her division and was the 93rd overall female while SGM Isolina Negron (PR ARNG), finished 9th in her age division.

SFC Ray Workman Jr. (UT ARNG) brought home 1st place in his division with a 131st overall finish. Workman Jr., who is 56, beat out 323 competitors in his age group and won his division by over two minutes.

SEPTEMBER 17
Dayton, Ohio (Wright-Patterson AFB)
Air Force Marathon

The All-Guard Team continued its winning tradition at the annual Air Force Marathon Sept. 17th, at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Oh.

Capping off the weekends awards was a first place finish by SGT Michelle Elliott (MO ANG) who completed the full marathon in 3 hours, 17 minutes, 48 seconds to win by nearly two minutes. She maintained a 7:33 per mile pace throughout the entire 26.2 mile race.

On the men’s side SSG Robert Schnell (AZ ARNG) was the 7th overall finisher and claimed 1st in his age group covering the course in 6:29 per mile pace with a finish time of 2 hours, 50 minutes. LTC Jeffery Olive (GA ARNG) maintained a 6:51 pace per mile pace to finish in 22nd place which was good enough to claim 4th place in his age group.

The marathon relay teams continued their domination of this race by capturing four first place awards in their respective categories. Due to injuries, last minute changes occurred and the alternates were able to step in and fill vital team roles.

The men’s military team consisting of SSgt Tyrell Heaton (MN ANG), Maj Tom Jackson (IL ANG), Maj Gary Bodony (IL ANG) and SSG James Bresette (AR ARNG) beat out all 219 teams to place first overall.

The master’s team, made up completely of runners more than 40 years of age, finished third overall. SSG Rafael Centeno, CPT Victor Cuevas, SSG William Gonzales and SGT Luis Diaz all from the Puerto Rico National Guard cemented a strong showing among master’s teams by winning their division by nearly 30 minutes.

A co-ed team, consisting of male and female runners, finished first in their division and ninth overall. CPT Whitney Miller (IN ARNG) led the team on the first leg followed by MAJ Eric Petersen (UT ARNG), SFC Trent Sinnett (IN ARNG) and SGT Tarissa Batenhorst (NE ARNG).

The All-Guard women’s relay with team members SGT Penny Hytrek (NE ARNG), OC Jessica Hoelting (NE ARNG), MAJ Holly Scott (DE ARNG) and 1LT Martha Swatt Robison (WY ARNG) finished six minutes ahead of their second place competition.

SSG Troy Harrison (PA ARNG) finished sixth in a highly competitive field in the half-marathon. His time of 1 hour, 11 minutes and 58 seconds was a personal best covering the 13.1 mile course in 5:30 per mile pace. SSG Alcides Colon (PR ARNG) finished in the top-ten with a ninth place overall finish in the half-marathon. Colon was the first master’s runner covering the course in 1 hour, 14 minutes, an average of 5:39 per mile pace.

The All-Guard team had a remarkable performance by MAJ Eric Petersen (UT ARNG) finishing first in the five kilometer race less than three hours after completing a seven mile leg on the winning co-ed relay. SSG Steven Murphy (PA ARNG) and SSG Curt Carey (IN ARNG) placed 3rd and 4th respectively in the five kilometer race.

SGT Rose Mattie (AZ ARNG) placed second overall and won her age group in the women’s five kilometer race.
