Getting Into Shape for Basic Combat Training

Physical training safely prepares you for the tough demands of being a Soldier. It is an integral part of regular training as a Guard member. Soldiers reporting to BCT vary in their level of physical fitness. Your RRNCO will assist in establishing an appropriate fitness program. After that, it is your responsibility to ensure that you are well prepared for the challenges of BCT.

During the first few days of BCT, you will have your physical capabilities assessed at the Reception Battalion. Physiological differences between men and women such as muscle tone, body fat percentage, bone mass, heart size and rate, flexibility, lung capacity, and response to heat are taken into account. Therefore, the number of repetitions required on physical fitness tests varies between men and women. However, the degree of difficulty is the same.

In order to leave the Reception Battalion and move to the next phase of training, new Soldiers are required to perform a select number of push-ups: thirteen for men, three for women. Some Reception Battalions have sit-up and one-mile run requirements in addition to the push-up event.

New Soldiers should remember that the same standards on maintaining weight apply when you leave BCT as when you enlisted.
