About the Authors

Ronald Hunter started his military career in the U.S. Army National Guard in 1981. He took advantage of many of the programs discussed in this book including the Montgomery GI Bill, ROTC Simultaneous Membership Program, Tuition Assistance Program and the state education benefit offered by the Massachusetts Army National Guard which paid 100 percent of his tuition for a four-year degree.  In addition to his twenty-three years of military service, he is also the president and publisher of Uniformed Services Almanac, Inc. which has served the military community for over 45 years.

Margaret B. Tankovich, Colonel, USAR (Ret.)  has a background in both education and the military.  She has taught French at the college level for twenty years and has over thirty years combined Active and Reserve Component service in the United States Army.  She holds a Master of Arts in Education Degree from East Carolina University with subsequent postgraduate studies in French at the Monterey Institute of International Studies and Fordham University.  She is also a graduate of the United States Naval War College.  Her research for this book included interviewing education professionals, parents, and students in order to fully appreciate today’s issues and concerns about preparing for and financing a college education.

The authors wish to thank Debra M. Gordon, Senior Editor, for her significant contributions to this project.  Debra has the instincts of a concerned parent as well as the perspective of a daughter to and wife of a military member.  These traits coupled with a degree in Family Studies gave her the insight needed to add depth and sensitivity to the topics covered throughout this publication.  In addition to editing and advising, Debra was responsible for the layout and design of this book.  Her expertise in desktop publishing and her dedication to create a first-class publication are clearly evident and greatly appreciated.

The authors also wish to thank Holley Wiedemann and Alicia Gordon for their contributions to this edition.  Holley’s editorial comments contributed to the overall success of this project and together their artistic contributions made this book much more appealing.  Holley added the illustrative photos which now enhance the text.  Alicia used her creative talent to design the graphics which add character and comprehension to the narrative.
